01 · THE CLASSIC CITY VIEW
Take your time at Vrijthof.
Vrijthof is a natural starting point for a first visit. Look up at the Basilica of Saint Servatius and the red tower of Sint-Janskerk, then enjoy the square at a slower pace from a café terrace.
It is a place to appreciate both Maastricht’s historic buildings and its everyday life.

02 · A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE
Cross Saint Servatius Bridge.
Walk over the Maas on the Sint Servaasbrug, which connects the historic centre with Wyck. Pause for a river view before continuing into the streets on the other bank.
Combine the crossing with a coffee stop or a stroll through Wyck rather than simply turning back. It is an easy way to see another side of Maastricht.
03 · MEDIEVAL MAASTRICHT
Discover Helpoort and the city walls.
Helpoort is the Netherlands’ oldest surviving city gate. Its towers make a memorable introduction to Maastricht’s history as a fortified city.
Continue along the surrounding old walls and green paths. Looking at the gate together with the fortifications makes it easier to imagine how this part of the city once worked.

04 · THE QUIETER CORNERS
Wander through the Jeker Quarter.
Follow the Jeker into a neighbourhood of historic streets, watermills and small corners that are easy to miss when you rush between the main sights.
Continue towards the city park for a change of pace. The combination of water, greenery and old stone walls makes this a lovely part of Maastricht to explore slowly.

Many sights in the historic centre are close enough to combine on foot. Wear comfortable shoes: cobblestones, uneven surfaces and steps can make some routes challenging. Our free walking tour is not wheelchair accessible.
Do I need tickets for these Maastricht sights?
You can explore the public squares, bridge, streets and exterior views without an attraction ticket. Church interiors, museums and special events may have separate admission charges or opening times. Check with the venue before visiting.
How do I book a free walking tour in Maastricht?
Choose a date and available departure on our booking calendar. The tour lasts around two hours and is in English for international visitors. There is a €2 booking fee per person; afterwards, choose your guide’s tip. Dutch visitors are better served by a Dutch-language tour with the VVV Tourist Information Office or Maastricht Marketing.
